Product Update – Transmission Reports

September 12, 2017

Greetings,

Ansergy is launching a new bundle of reports built around several sources of transmission data. Those sources include:

  • Cal ISO Transmission Flows
  • Cal ISO TTC
  • BPA Transmission Flows
  • BPA Short-term TTC
  • BPA Long-term TTC Plan
  • EIA Net Interchange (Balancing Authority)
  • EIA Interchange (Balancing Authority to Balancing Authority)

The reports are organized by region, we have selected an area that we think is most suitable to your organization. However you are free to add any region, just ask ([email protected]).

The Reports are broken into summary tables and charts. Our summary tables show the current hour (TTC or Flows) and compare that to last hour, two hours back, yesterday, two days ago, etc. At a glance, you can see how things are different. All hourly data is scraped every 30 minutes assuring you that our reports always have the most recent updates. Clients can schedule their Emailed Reports for any hour, as frequently as they like, any or all days.

The Long Term TTC Plan is a recap of the most recent BPA and ISO updates by line:

The ISO also includes a short-term TTC and Long-Term Plan

ISO transmission is split between Northern California and Southern California, but also includes key lines from outside of the hubs (Malin500, NOB, Palo, Mead, etc).

Each line is charted to track flows over the last eight days:

For some lines that frequently approach TTC, as Palo did in the above example, we include the TTC; others we don’t as it distorts the chart scale. Clicking the plot image will take you to the live report.

The Balancing Authority data is interesting, but unlike Demand, it is only updated once a day. The Net Interchange is updated on a 5-8 hour delay, the BA to BA interchanges are two-day delays. Still, they provide useful insight into what is happening.

Bear in mind, these are not “line” flows, they are net flows from one Balancing Authority to another, and may reflect multiple lines. Each region is summarized in three tables, Exports, Imports, and Intra-Regional flows. All of the BA to BA can be charted by going to the website and running reports.

All BA’s net interchanges are included in the report; some are very interesting.

These are the net interchange, by hour, for Northwestern. Much of that export is Colstrip and most of the day on day, and hour on the hour, volatility is due to that large coal plant. Three BAs in the Southwest report are very large gas generators (Gila River, Griffith, and New Harqualah):

These genco BAs reflect their hourly production and can be used to track outages. Utility interchanges can add insight into their net positions and support real-time trading decisions:

These are the last full eight days of net hourly interchange for Portland General Electric; note the utility is a net importer (negative) and is buying about 700 aMW less in the last couple of days than last week.

Your transmission report will arrive around 5:45 AM PDT each day for the next eight days. The Interchange Report will come a few hours later, at 7:45 AM PDT. If you would like to add any other regions drop us a note if you would prefer not getting these reports let us know. We will remove your subscription after three days of inactivity.
